Jazmine (Shaw) Matney

Jazmine (Shaw) Matney was born in Columbus, Ohio, to Neal and Roberta Stephens, and was the youngest of four children. At the age of 12, her family relocated to Louisiana, where they lived until she was 15 years old, when they were displaced by Hurricane Katrina. At that time, Jazmine’s family returned to Ohio, and she began attending Hamilton Township High School.

During her time at Hamilton Township, Jazmine participated in basketball, where she earned MSL Honorable Mention honors (2008). It was also during this time that she was introduced to track. What began as an extracurricular activity to enjoy with friends quickly became something she loved. In 2006, Jazmine was the MSL champion in the 100m and 400m dash, and she finished the year placing 7th at the OHSAA State Track Meet in the 4x800m relay. In 2007, she placed 1st in the 200m dash and the 4x400m relay at the MSL meet and was a State Qualifier in the 400m dash. In 2008, she was the MSL champion in the 400m dash and again qualified for the State Meet in that event. Jazmine currently holds the school outdoor record in the Distance Medley Relay, 4x400m relay, and 400m dash.

After graduating from Hamilton Township, Jazmine continued her track career at Heidelberg University, where she was recognized eight times as an All-OAC athlete. She was a three-time OAC Champion and a one-time NCAA Division III National Meet qualifier. Jazmine also currently holds the school outdoor record in the 4x400m relay.

Jazmine graduated from Heidelberg University with a degree in Criminal Justice. She now works as a Deputy with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, where she hopes to become a certified police officer. Jazmine has a wonderful husband, John, to whom she has been married for 10 years, and together they have three amazing boys—Isaiah (18), John Jr. (8), and Jonah (4)—who they love and adore.
