Erin was born and raised on Owsley Street in Southern Pines just a few miles
away from where her parents, David and Becky Boyd grew up. Erin’s older sister
Jackie Foltz graduated from HTHS in 1995 and although they didn’t share the same
interests in sporting endeavors, Jackie was a Ranger supporter through and through
and always an inspiration to her little sister. David is a retired United States Navy
Veteran and Becky continues to show her Ranger pride as she drives a school bus
route for the district. The Boyd household was small but always huge when it came to
love, support and encouragement. That foundation proved to be the most impactful
when it came to academics and athletics.
Growing up, Erin was a competitive gymnast. Gymnastics was not a school
sport and 16+ hours were spent in the gym by middle school. That commitment
fostered grit and determination but didn’t leave much time to be involved in all that
HTHS had to offer. Erin dabbled in middle school track and field in 8th grade before
making the decision to retire from gymnastics and pursue high school athletics.
Freshman year at Hamilton provided all the new and exciting opportunities.
From cheering the football team on in the fall, playing on the basketball team in the
winter, and learning what track & field was all about. Coach Ben Schall decided hurdles
would be a fine choice for Erin to give a try and like usual, he was correct. It was his
excitement while coaching Erin, coupled with his confidence that this could be
something great. This led Erin to believe in him! Coach Schall’s ability to teach and
inspire is unmatched and it truly falls just below that family support foundation in terms
of the way it impacted Erin’s life.

Erin’s senior year had some setbacks as she tore her ACL in the first basketball
game of the season. With support from family, teammates and coaches she was able
to run her senior season after surgery and physical therapy, although being able to
compete to full potential was not completely possible. Fortunately, she was able to
continue with her track & field journey at Otterbein College receiving OAC conference
athletic and academic honors. Erin holds two top ten records at Otterbein in the triple
jump as well as the 100m hurdles. After college, Erin gained employment in the Dublin
City School district teaching 1st grade. She has been a teacher for 22 years teaching
various elementary grade levels. Erin married her high school sweetheart Nic Smith in
2002 and now has 3 children. Gracie, 19 years old, is a Sophomore at Ohio University
and is following in her mom’s footsteps hurdling, sprinting and jumping for the Bobcats
while she is pursuing her Teaching degree. Shiloh, 17 years old, is a senior at Grove
City High School. She is a talented softball player who is hoping to continue playing at
the next level as she starts her study to become a Nurse. Cooper is 14 and is an 8th
grader at Jackson Middle school. Erin is immensely proud of her family and beyond
grateful for their support. Whether it be through academic, athletic, career, or family
endeavors…it truly takes a village. That village of supporters for Erin may have started
on Owsley Street in Southern Pines but it certainly grew through her journey at
Hamilton. Erin is so grateful for this beautiful honor of being inducted into the HTHS
Athletic Hall of Fame.
